Ubuntu Education Fund
Scholars After-School Programme
Founded in 1999, Ubuntu Education Fund aims to transform the lives of children in the townships of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. A South African teacher, Banks Gwaxula, and an American university student, Jacob Lief, developed Ubuntu Education Fund to provide an empowering environment and access to services to vulnerable children and their families in township communities. Today, our 75+ person staff serves over 40,000 children, youth and adults with life-saving HIV services and vital educational resources.
About the Ubuntu Scholars After-School Programme
With the support of The Make A Difference Trust, Ubuntu Education Fund will launch a full-scale, expanded after-school programme for vulnerable children and orphans living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. This project will provide 200 Scholars in grades seven to 12 with comprehensive educational and psychosocial support, including intensive after-school tutoring, exam preparation and school supplies, enriching activities, career guidance and emotional support, nutritious snacks and a safe environment six hours a week. We aim to improve the academic performance, health and well-being of these youth and stabilise their homes. This will ultimately lift them out of poverty and into a world in which they can lead the new South Africa.
