Gift Aid

Gift Aid

Make your gifts go further at no extra cost to you...

Gift Aid is a government scheme which enables individuals in the UK to make tax-effective donations to charity. If you are a UK tax-payer, you can significantly increase the value of your donation by providing The Make A Difference Trust with a Gift Aid declaration. This gives us the authority to reclaim the tax you would have already paid on your gift through income tax or capital gains tax. The claim is made directly with the Inland Revenue at the basic rate of income tax meaning we receive and additional 28% of your gift amount – a massive 28p extra for every pound given.

All donations made in the last six years – including regular gifts such as Direct Debits – are eligible for the scheme (excluding those made through Charities Aid Foundation).

Should you wish The Make A Difference Trust to reclaim the tax on your donations, please download a Gift Aid Declaration Form, complete the details and send it to:

Gift Aid FAQs

Do I qualify for Gift Aid?
To qualify, you simply need to be a UK Tax payer and pay enough tax during the year to cover the amount we are reclaiming on your donations. If any of the below apply to you and you wish to significantly increase the value of your donations, please complete a declaration today.

Tax is taken from your wages or pension before you receive them
You have to fill in a self-assessment form

You have any taxable savings (in a building society, for instance), or a pension plan, or investment income;

You have recently paid any capital gains tax, or expect to pay it in the near future. For example, this could be on the sale of a property or some shares.

Already agreed to Gift Aid with another charity?
Not a problem. You can support as many charities as you wish through Gift Aid. All you need to do is ensure each individual charity has their own declaration form and that you are paying enough during the tax year to cover your total annual donations.

Paying a higher tax rate?
Unfortunately, charities are only able to claim back tax at the basic rate. However, you are eligible for a rebate of the difference when you submit your tax return – simply include all your charitable donations to receive an additional personal tax relief of 18%.

Do I need to make a declaration with every gift?
No – a dated Gift Aid declaration form covers all gifts made in the last six years and all gifts made in the future until instructed otherwise – for example if your tax status changes.

If, for any reason you decide your Gift should not be included in Gift Aid, please do let us know. Perhaps you do not think you’ll pay enough tax to cover the amount to be reclaimed, or maybe you tax status in the six years previous to your declaration was variable – whatever the reason, get in touch and we’ll amend our records immediately.
